Tamil Nadu announces new power tariff plan; government to brief Assembly today
The state government will present a revised electricity tariff framework in the Assembly, promising targeted relief for households while keeping industrial supply stable.
The Tamil Nadu government will place a revised electricity tariff plan before the Assembly today, officials said, describing it as a balance between household relief and the financial health of the public utility.
According to people familiar with the draft, the proposal keeps a subsidised slab for low-consumption homes, introduces a clearer time-of-day signal for commercial users, and sets a multi-year path for reducing the utility's working-capital stress.
What households should expect
Domestic consumers in the lowest slab are likely to see little change in the billed amount. Officials said the emphasis is on transparency: every unit charged, every subsidy booked, and every cross-subsidy from industry will be published in a quarterly note.
Industry and agriculture
Industry bodies have asked for a stable three-year trajectory so that factories can sign power-purchase agreements without fear of a sudden jump. Farmer groups, meanwhile, want the existing agricultural supply window protected during the samba and kuruvai seasons.
Inivarum Thalaimurai will publish the full schedule of slabs as soon as the papers are tabled.
